Pete won his website in a raffle. What he did with it is the real story.

The First Step.

One of our clients coached the local Junior Football Club. They were putting together a raffle and wanted to know if we could provide a prize. We provided a free website to the lucky ticket holder. Pete entered the raffle and won a completely free website. We often joke with Pete about winning him in a raffle. We never did find out if Pete was the first prize or runners up prize.

Breaking The Ice.

Our first contact with Pete was like a missing sketch from Monty Python. We decided on a video call. The call connected, and I saw a man standing in a teal coloured laundry basket with a blonde wig on his head. He had then balanced the round laundry basket lid on top of his head. I spoke to Pete for some 40 minutes. I left the call knowing he wanted a website, and he agreed he wanted a website too. Not only that, but I was more entertained than informed. It was over the next few calls of Pete singing Ice Ice Baby from start to finish that some great ideas, images and text began to follow.

The Big Idea.

Pete shared one thing with me that stopped me in my tracks. After he told me his backstory, I could not stop thinking about how you come from such a dark place at an extremely difficult point in your life and turn it into a positive. Pete shared with me that he had an 8 week old baby boy. He was in and out of hospital as he had some complications. His employer at the time decided to fire him by text message. Here is Pete, no job, baby with some health concerns and trying to support his wife too. Pete did not let this get him down.

The Journey.

Build A Budget No matter how you build a website, budget is always part of the conversation. You either pay with money and hand it over to someone who deals with everything. Or you pay with your own time. Pete paid with a raffle ticket. What he did with it is the real story. It’s great to find a client that understands it’s better to have something good and improve it over time, rather than wait for perfection.

Steps and Stages.

Pete found a part time job, and he began to build what is known as R n B Window Cleaning. In the early days, Pete was on his own. Working in the morning as a minibus driver. Out in the mid morning delivering flyers or cleaning windows. Then back to the part time minibus driving in the evening.

Make It Happen.

Most people would have folded. Pete started R n B Window Cleaning with his brother-in-law Tom. Tom had a job at the time. So Pete was building something big enough for two, on his own, until it was ready. Pete, Tom and Rachel are so focused it becomes a pleasure to work with them.

Feed and Grow.

Pete’s positivity shines through. I am not saying Pete is a super human. But, I believe if you turn Pete upside down and look on his bottom, you will see all the hallmarks of a true entrepreneur. I know from regular contact with Pete that he has some low times, but this is mainly when the football team he supports loses a match. It may be time to give up on Accrington Stanley. Window cleaning used to be simple. One bloke, one street. You either had a window cleaner or you didn’t. R n B don’t work like that. They get one house on a street and end up cleaning half the neighbourhood. Word travels when the work is good. Pete has found how to make targeted social posts work for R n B Window Cleaning. Combined with his other efforts of online advertising and local flyer drops, it’s clear to see how using various channels works when applied in equal measure. All of these efforts point back to the website. Pete knew from the start that a website is a tool. It either helps you reach a wider audience or it saves you time. R n B Window Cleaning’s website works because Pete built a business where the website becomes the natural next step. The work gets you in the door. The website keeps the door open.

Since May 2018, R n B Window Cleaning has gone from a one man band to a company that has a fleet of 5 vans out every day cleaning windows. Pete sees the value in having a website to support the digital efforts and ongoing growth of the business. Pete needed to stop answering the same questions on the phone. So we built a pricing page. Up to date prices, plain and simple. A straightforward contact form collects everything R n B need to book a customer in for their first clean. Pete gets to spend that time cleaning windows instead. Over time, we have added new features to the R n B Window Cleaning website. Each time we add something new it helps Pete, Tom and Rachel focus on providing the best customer service they can.
